Is Today’s Technology Harmful to Learning? Strategies for the consumer of contemporary Technology

Lately I visited my salon to obtain my haircut. These were managing a special – “Haircuts for $7.00 after 7:00 pm on Tuesday nights.” There have been more and more people than normal within the waiting area due to the special just as we are searching for methods to save cash. The majority of us who have been waiting were visually occupying ourselves basically we anxiously waited. There have been 5 to 6 people using hands-held electronics – phones, iPads etc. A couple were studying magazines and 2 people were studying books. I don’t know particularly exactly what the proprietors from the electronics used to do – there are lots of uses of these units including speaking, texting, hearing music, doing offers, surfing the net and studying. It made an appearance that the majority of the users were visually occupied.

Because we see such great technological advancement within our day, we might think we have elevated within our intelligence. Sadly, our education system appears to become floundering. Some might have us believe that our forefathers were broadly illiterate. To uncover the literacy in our forefathers we’re able to calculate the “readability” of the documents. Educators determine the readability or grade degree of a text using a graph counting the amount of sentences and syllables inside a 100-word passage. Our forefathers used lengthy words and lengthy sentences placing the readability far beyond nearly all students and adults today. For instance, I researched The Federalist Papers on the internet and decided on a 100-word passage from each one of the three authors (Alexander Hamilton Number One, James Madison #38 and John Jay #64). Each were a minimum of college level using Fry’s Readability Graph. Bear in mind these papers were supposed to have been read and understood by everybody through the Colonies, not only intellectuals.

Because of the relative insufficient close visual stimuli, these people permitted their eyes to build up normally. These were outdoors most of the time, allowing their visual system to mature. Also, they’d well-developed auditory systems. This may also be understood by studying the documents. Hearing one another speak in this manner helped too.

Our way of life are extremely very different now. However, we don’t have to go back to an agrarian society to revive a lot of what is lost. Below are great tips for that user of contemporary technology:

  1. Take breaks frequently – a minimum of searching up and outdoors.
  2. Whenever possible take more time breaks, walking outdoors.
  3. Get sunshine and relax.
  4. Use appropriate sized studying material for youthful eyes.
  5. Limit screen time (TV, Computer, and hands-held electronics) for youthful children whose auditory and visual systems continue to be maturing.
  6. Use meal occasions to go over current occasions or any other issues like a family.
  7. Read together.
  8. Encourage and model studying for your kids.
